NZ Day 6 Journal (11/14/16): After our big hike on the Routeburn Track yesterday, today was supposed to be a rest day. We drove up the 13km winding road into The Remarkables ski resort which stands above Queenstown to get a nice view, but once there we had to hike to the lookout 1000 feet further up!
Clara is testing the patience of the local wildlife as we fuel up for another day exploring the areas around Queenstown and The Remarkables.
Clara carefully picks her way along a rocky spine poking out of the snowfield. Although it is spring here, it is still icy and slick!
Clara is only steps away from reaching the summit of the Shadow Basin Lookout at the top of The Remarkables. After an hour and 1000 feet of uphill snowfield climbing we’ve finally made it!
We are tired but thrilled to have pushed to the top. This view is insane!
The view from Shadow Basin Lookout atop The Remarkables is beyond compare. Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu lie far below.
Our summit bid successful, Clara Eilene Kerley begins the trek back down across the snow fields and into the clouds.
Lake Hayes and the turquoise waters of the Kawarau River are visible below as we descend the winding road from The Remarkables ski area.
